9/11/11 – On Sunday morning the Putnam Valley/Cortlandt Baseball Association (PVC) held a memorial service at Union Field in the Putnam Valley Town Park.
There were over 50 people who came to honor two special people who passed away. Cliff Taffner and Cliff Luft. There was the unveiling of plaques for each recognizing their accomplishments to the community, youth baseball and most importantly the kids.
The ceremony was organized by PVC board members Marty McDermott and Wayne Gabari. The surviving spouses, Linda Taffner and Ellen Luft along with Cliff Luft’s mother Gladys each received a dozen red roses. Wayne addressed the gathering. ” I am proud and blessed to have known both of these men in my life. They selflessly devoted their time to developing the youth of our community through the PVC and Westchester Putnam Baseball Association (WPBA) programs.”
“Cliff Luft coached for all the right reasons. He was all about the kids. Always teaching sportsmanship with a heart warming smile on his face. He cared about the kids more then about winning at all costs. All the young men who played for him will never forget the baseball skills and more importantly the life lessons that he left them with. They are better people for the experience.”
“Cliff Taffner is one of the founding fathers of PVC and the WPBA. 20 years there was no meaningful baseball traveling program for the kids in Putnam Valley as well as Westchester and Putnam counties. Cliff and I went to meetings with representatives from towns in Westchester and Putnam during the winter where we met in a barn to form the WPBA that he loved. Since the beginning tens of thousands of young men and women have played competitive baseball and softball during the summer and fall months. In forming PVC he would take time from his job and raise funds to buy uniforms and equipment. He worked on fields and scheduling umpires. He did it all for the kids with love.”
“Today, as we look at these plaques on the back of this dugout, we can all feel good to know that their memory will go on. Each time that a person plays on this field and their parents and relatives who accompany them read these plaques, Cliff Taffner and Cliff Luft will be remembered and the positive energy that will be created from their thoughts about how special these two men were will warm their spirits and the spirits of their loved ones.”
“You can be sure the spirits of these great men will be in attendance at all games played at Union Field watching over the young kids they loved.”
Jeremy luft and Matt Taffner spoke about their fathers. Emotions of love were high and it is very obvious that the two Cliff’s left behind a heritage to be proud of. Cliff Taffner’s friend and neighbor Marty Sommer spoke beautifully about how much Cliff loved baseball and most importantly the kids.
PVC and the WPBA is extremely proud of these 2 men and their contributions in promoting youth baseball and by so doing instilling outstanding ethics in sportsmanship in all the young people in our community who benefited from their efforts.
